Steve Collegeman
I had a desire to get out and see the world. For me photography allowed me to take that journey.
What is a photographic style?
Photographic style is the way I consistently perceive the world, which reflects who I am, what my vison is, and what I want to express about myself and my emotions. It's not just about making pictures of the same subject, it's about the unique approach I take in capturing that subject that defines my style. My style should be a true representation of my personality.
As an artist, I feel it's important for my work to constantly evolve and not fall into predictable patterns. I believe that if I allow myself to lapse into a formula, I'll stop growing as an artist.
Maintaining authenticity and staying true to my own vision is crucial. Of course, I also recognize that clients have expectations when they hire me for an assignment. While meeting their needs is important, I always try to infuse my own style into the images I create.
During my early years in film photography when the darkroom was my sanctuary - a place where I could be creative and express myself. This gave me the ability to closely study my subjects, the deeper my understanding of them became.
I've always been focused on ensuring my clients are happy with the final product, I never considered what others thought of my photography. But as time has passed, I've come to realize that it doesn't really matter - what's important is that my work is a true reflection of myself and my artistic vision.
Standing out from the crowd.
I saw and captured individuality in a sea of sameness and even though it’s in black and white you know this guy is like no other in that crowd.

This is an old image, one of my very first and part of a series on the Vietnam anti-war demonstrations in Washington, DCÂ in 1969-1970.
The Wild
His weary expression, diminishing mane, and pronounced scars tell his story. The story I want told

He looks like I feel, the best days are long gone. He’s waiting for the rains to come along with a long awaited dinner.
A Masterpiece
Silhouette of strength, Skin as rich as night, A woman, a queen, a sight.

In her eyes, a story untold, Grace and beauty, uncontrolled, A masterpiece, captured in gold.
